Final Bearing

Co-written by Don Keith and Cdr. George Wallace, USN (retired), a former nuclear submarine captain.

Juan de Santiago is not only a billionaire coca grower, he is also a deranged revolutionary; the commander of the most powerful private army in South America. Backed by power-hungry rogue nations who supply him with the latest weaponry, de Santiago devises a plan that will dishearten the American antidrug effort and make him El Jefe once and for all.

A successful soldier in Florida’s antidrug war, Tom Kincaid is an expert on Colombia, with connections that lead directly to Juan de Santiago himself. But when US politicians demand a publicity-driven drug bust, they blow the cover of Kincaid’s carefully crafted network, leaving most of his informants dead, and get the DEA agent exiled to the relative backwater of Seattle. Commander Jonathan Ward and his crew on the old attack sub Spadefish are on one last mission. They are to launch a strike that will put de Santiago and his empire out of business for good. They are getting help from Bill Beaman and his SEAL team, who are searching for the secret laboratories of de Santiago.

Following deep jungle trails and hiking the lofty mountains of the ancient Inca Empire, they are intent on driving a stake through the heart of de Santiago’s drug empire. But there is a leak in the Colombian government. Beaman and his SEALs are being stalked.

From the old highways of the Incas to the plush haciendas of the drug lords, guerrilla armies are lurking, striking out at those who threaten their lucrative trade. And at the same time, a futuristic mini-sub leaves Colombia. Destination: Seattle. And it is loaded with the most lethal, addictive substance known to man.

Firing Point

At the top of the world…
At the bottom of the sea…
A war has begun.

Below the polar ice cap, an American nuclear submarine moves quietly in the freezing water, tailing a new Russian sub. But the usual, unspoken game of hide-and-seek between opposing captains is ended when the Americans hear sounds of disaster and flooding, and the Russian sub sinks in a thousand feet of water. The American sub rushes to help, only to join its former quarry in the deep.

The situation ignites tensions around the world. As both Washington and Moscow prepare for what may be the beginnings of World War III, the USS Toledo—led by young, untested Captain Joe Glass—heads to the location to give aid. He soon discovers that the incident was no accident. And the men behind it have yet to make their final move.

A move only Glass can stop.

Their secret base is Nusa Funata, a dark and inhospitable island in the Java Sea. Jon Hunter commands the nuclear submarine SAN FRANCISCO. Driven by an inner fire, Hunter relentlessly pursues every opportunity to prove himself and his beloved boat. Hunter’s boss, Commodore Carlucci, will do anything to move his own career forward, including holding Hunter down. When the US intelligence agencies catch some whiffs of the activity on Nusa Funata, the SAN FRANCISCO is ordered to find out what is going on. Once they have confirmed that Nusa Funata is being used to manufacture the deadly biological weapon, the threat must be neutralized. It is exactly the type mission that Hunter had been praying for.

A young Naval Academy midshipman, a few SEALs, and the crew of a stolen submarine are the only people in a position to stop terrorists bent on bringing down a nuclear Armageddon, unleashing a holy war on mankind. Ripped directly from today’s headlines, it all starts in a part of the world that has for centuries been designated on navigational charts as The Dangerous Grounds.
